Undocumented Justice

“This is my home and I am not going to go down without a fight.”

Karen Reyes, deaf education teacher and plaintiff in DACA case

When ICE threatens 700,000 fellow Dreamers, Luis Cortes Romero fights back — and becomes the first undocumented attorney to argue a case at the U.S. Supreme Court. A charismatic immigration attorney and DACA recipient, Luis risks his own safety to join a powerful and highly visible legal team. Their stunning Supreme Court win fortifies a growing, vigorous and urgent campaign for compassionate immigration reform with a pathway to citizenship.

Within days of his inauguration, President Biden introduced the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021. Congress is scheduled to debate this legislation. Will it come to a vote in both houses or stall yet again? In the courts, critics continue to challenge DACA, creating more uncertainty for the Dreamers. This ongoing crisis forms the social and political context of UNDOCUMENTED JUSTICE.

“If you’re in this country illegally… you should look over your shoulder, and you need to be worried.”

ICE Acting Director Thomas Homan, 2017

Fear is a fact of life for undocumented people in America. This was especially true under the Trump Administration, where even DACA recipients supposedly safe from deportation were subject to cruel family separation. Hope came when newly-elected President Biden introduced the U.S. Citizenship Act of 2021. Yet it stalled in Congress, where vehement anti-immigrant attacks have become common in political discourse. Luis’s story resonates because, at its heart, it is about family, struggle, and the meaning of home. Luis is but one of the hundreds of thousands fighting for their future and challenging the narrative around immigration justice.
