The
Heart of the Possible
 A story
of concentric personal dilemmas and political conflicts, The Heart
of the Possible unfolds against the backdrop of a modern Democratic
National Convention. Greg Epstein, a white reporter covering the
convention, is in a passionate relationship with Melanie Johnson, a
black activist. Greg is torn between the aloof role of mainstream
journalism and the urgency of activism, while Melanie struggles with
the shadows of the nation's racial barriers - and the hidden legacies
of her mother's life.
The Heart of the
Possible is filled with tensions between courage and compromise,
evasion and clarity, risk and refuge. The story pulses with the flow of
historical consequences: from the workaday decisions in a newsroom to
the intimacy of a bedroom to the floor of a political nominating
convention. In this multilayered story, men and women who have learned
to cut corners for professional advancement come face to face with the
downsides of their caution.
The Heart of the
Possible has been made feasible by the resurgence of independent
film-making and distribution aided by High Definition digital video
technology. This is a feature movie project with a commitment to
depicting - and challenging - the personal and political dynamics that
allow injustices of the past to exert power over America's present.
